KNITTED POPPY (SMALL WITH LEAF)
Body of Poppy
With 3.25mm needles, cast on 36 stitches in red double knit yarn (DK yarn).
Rows: 1 & 2 knit.
Row 3: purl.
Row 4: knit.
Row 5: (purl 9, pass yarn forward between the needles and round under the cast on edge twice, pull tight while working next stitch – this creates scalloped edge) repeat to last 9 stitches, purl 9.
Row 6: Knit 3, (knit 3 together, knit 6) x 3, knit 3 together, knit 3 (28 stitches)
Row 7: Purl 2 together, repeat to end (14 stitches)
Row 8: knit 2 together, repeat to end (7 stitches)
Break yarn and thread through these 7 stitches and draw up tight. Sew seam, over sew 3 rows at top to create scallop.
Centre
Cast on 14 stitches with black. Cast off. Roll up into a button shape and stitch to poppy.
Leaf (optional)
Cast on 3 stitches in green.
Row 1: Knit
Row 2: Purl
Row 3: Knit 1, make 1, knit 1, make 1, knit 1 (5 stitches).
Row 4: Purl.
Row 5: Knit 2, make 1, knit 1, make 1, knit 2 (7 stitches).
Row 6: Purl.
Row 7: Cast 1, knit to end.
Row 8: Cast off 1, purl to end (5 stitches)
Row 9: Knit.
Row 10: Purl.
Row 11: Cast off 1, knit to end.
Row 12: Cast off 1, purl to end (3 stitches)
Row 13: Knit.
Row 14: Slip 1, purl 2 together, pass slip stich over. Fasten off.
Sew leaf on behind poppy.
Finished size 7-9 cm diameter.
KNITTED POPPY (LARGE)
For the best finish, knit with a Double Knit (DK yarn). The size of needle you choose will determine how big the poppy will be. The recommended size is 3.5mm or 3.75mm (UK9).
Easy garter/knit stitch pattern for beginners
Colour A Red (one ball will make a lot of poppies!)
Colour B scrap of black or a black button.
Body of Poppy
Using Col A cast on 120 stitches. Rows 1-4 knit Row 5 knit 3 stitches together across the row (40 stitches) Rows 6-9 knit Row 10 knit 2 stitches together across the row (20 stitches) Row 11-14 knit Row 15 knit 2 stitches together across the row (10 stitches) Cut yarn leaving a trail of about 20cm
Thread tail through yarn needle and slip all the remaining live stitches onto the yarn tail and pull tight. Pull around into a circle and then mattress stitch (or use whatever stitching you normally use) to seam for an invisible seam. Sew in ends.
Centre of Poppy
Using B, cast on 16 stitches. Cast off. Coil into a tight spiral and sew base to the centre. Or use a black or green button with 4 holes and sew to centre of poppy.
Finished size 9-10 cm diameter.
CROCHET POPPY
Yarn used: Stylecarft Special DK in Lipstick, Black and Meadow
Hook used: 3.5mm (but larger or smaller can be used)
ch- Chain
tr- Treble
dtr- Double treble
ss- Slip stitch
To make the poppy
Foundation chain: ch4 and connect
First round: ch1, 10dc, connect
Second round: ch2, 2,tr, 2tr, 3dtr, 2tr, ch2, ss, ch2, 3tr, 2tr, 4dtr, 3tr, ch2, connect and tie off
To make the Leaf
Foundation: ch10
First side: 3tr in third ch from the hook, tr, tr, tr, htr, htr, dc, ss, ch 2
Second side: ss (in same space as previous ss), dc, htr, htr, tr, tr, tr, 3tr, connect to top of first tr.
To continue on and add a stem: ch4, dc into 3rd chain from hook, dc into next ch, connect to base of leaf.
